Gauvain Manhattan started this serie of videogames canevas in 2013 when he was studying art in Angoulême. The idea was to confront two very different images and intricate them to create an immersive mix in the same picture. The artist collects finished canevas in flea markets and creates a scenery with videogames sprites and references. When the composition is done, he restitches the different elements using needlepoint techniques and stretches the canevas in his previous frame. Old fashioned canevas and iconic videogames are not as opposite as they seem because they can cohabitate easily through these tapestries. Gauvain Manhattan a démarré la série des canevas jeux vidéos en 2013 alors qu’il étudiait à Angoulême. L’idée était de confronter deux imaginaires traditionnellement très différents et de les réunir au sein d’une même œuvre. L’artiste récupère de vieux canevas en vide grenier où sur internet et détermine la scène agrémentée de références tirées de jeux vidéos. Quand la composition est faite, il débrode et rebrode les différents éléments en utilisant des techniques de demi point, puis retend la toile dans son cadre d’origine. Canevas kitschs et jeux vidéos icôniques ont bien plus en commun qu’on ne pourrait le croire quand on les voit aussi bien cohabiter au sein de ces tapisseries. If you are interested in a special commissionned tapestry featuring your favourite game, it is something Gauvain Manhattan can realise. However there are some conditions that you need to be aware of first. The artist only reinterprets classic videogames (no animes, comics, movies …). Not all games would fit nicely in an old forest or a large mountain landscape so if your game is off topic, the project will be kindly declined. For the budget, the price can vary a lot depending on the size of the canevas, the amount of added elements, the shipping location … so an estimation will be made after figuring out the final composition. Then a 30% advance will be asked to seal the commission and to buy all the first materials. The rest of it will be asked at the end but before shipping the canevas. Stitching a canevas is a lot of work, it can take months till it is completely ready so you will have to be patient before hanging it to your wall. Si vous souhaitez avoir une toile personnalisée représentant votre jeu préféré, c’est quelque chose que Gauvain Manhattan peut réaliser. Il y a cependant quelques conditions préalables dont vous devez être informé. L’artiste ne réinterprète que des jeux vidéos classiques (pas d’animes, de films, de comics …). Tous les jeux ne s’intègreraient pas correctement dans un décor de forêt ou un paysge de montagne, s’il est hors sujet, votre projet sera poliment décliné. Le budget peut beaucoup varier selon la taille du canevas, la quantité de retouches à apporter … une estimation vous sera donc proposée une fois la composition globale établie. Il vous sera ensuite demandé une avance à hauteur de 30% pour conclure la commande et pour financer l’achat des matières premières. Le reste sera réglé à la fin du projet avant l’expédition de l’oeuvre. Broder un canevas prend du temps, cela peut demander des mois de travail avant qu’une toile soit entièrement achevée, il vous faudra donc vous armer d’un peu de patience avant de pouvoir accrocher le votre au mur.
